THIS WEEK'S TOPIC:
What are the best maintenance tips to follow to keep the deck in top shape? Are there any new building materials or accessories that a homeowner should know about prior to having a new deck built?

For an existing wood deck, a monthly inspection is recommended. The inspection should consist of checking for loose fasteners, deck boards or railing, or warped deck boards and splinters. An annual water sealant or staining will help maintain the wood's beauty. Without proper treatment, a wood deck will need major repairs within five years.  For the more active lifestyles, a low-maintenance deck is highly recommended. Low-maintenance decks consist of wood and plastic composites, such as Trex, Nexwood, Boardwalk and Timber Tech. These products normally have a 10-to-20-year warranty. Vinyl and plastic decks, such as Heritage, Kroy and Eon, come in a variety of colors and textures. For the consumer who does not care for vinyl, Eon offers a "wood-look" product. These vinyl and plastic decks offer a limited lifetime warranty. Many of these decks are installed with a hidden fastener design for a clean look.  Homeowners can choose different railing styles to match their surroundings. Railings can match the low-maintenance deck systems or can fade into the background by using the low-maintenance aluminum, vinyl that matches the home, or even glass railing to ensure an unobstructed view.  All of these products can be made in many different shapes and dimensions, just like the regular pressure-treated wood decks.
